Breaking out of the guilt trap

FINDING REFUGE AND STRENGTH - Dr. Harold J. Sala - The Philippine Star

A gnawing conscience fed by sin and guilt can produce a living hell on Earth.

The woman who penned the following words understands this internal torment: “Yesterday I revealed to my husband the truth about my unfaithfulness. I’m now at God’s great mercy at this point as to the outcome of our marriage.”

Sometimes we want to believe things will turn out OK, but lose sight of what we know is right and become trapped. How can you break out of this torturous cycle?

First, come to your senses and say, “This is wrong; I’ve got to free myself from this situation.” This is what happened to the prodigal son who, Jesus said in His parable, “came to his senses.”

Second, confess your wrongdoing to God, and to those whom you have wronged. Confess only what is necessary to say, to the right person, at the right time.

Third, break the cycle of wrongdoing. Go public with your commitment. Get out of the door, and say “Good-bye” forever to the snare that has entrapped you.

Fourth, move on with your life. Getting support at this stage in your life is crucial. Join a small group or sign on a 12-step program with people who understand your failure.

Fifth, refuse to look behind. When God has forgiven you, you must forgive yourself, and refuse to let anyone or anything push you back into the ditch. God’s intention is for you to be free.
