What this year's elections mean to me

- Nestor O. Jardin -

MANILA, Philippines - I have been a dutiful citizen as far as suffrage is concerned. Ever since I became old enough to vote, I have made it a personal commitment to exercise this right diligently, never missing a national or local election. I have also been an informed voter and have made an effort to understand current political issues and endeavored to know the qualifications and platforms of the candidates. And yes, there were elections when I even actively campaigned for certain candidates.

Why? I guess I love my country too much not to care. Like most Filipinos, I know that the results of every election will affect my future and that of generations to come. A bad leader will inevitably find a way to wreak havoc on our economy, politics, national image, social cohesiveness or even the artistic and cultural landscape.

This year’s national elections are important to me as a private citizen. Beyond exercising my right to vote, it will be a chance for me to renew my hope for our country. Primarily, I cling to the hope that the results of the elections will see a new Government that will address the issues and concerns that are vital to me and our country.

When all the election dust has settled, I hope our new leader will focus on the economy and work to bring more jobs for the poor. I hope to see a leader who will provide moral ascendancy and integrity in the presidency, thus inspiring me and the rest of the Filipinos to work for the same national goals. I hope to see a new leader who will take a firm stand on climate change and do concrete things to protect our environment. I hope our new leadership will recognize the importance of socio-cultural transformation as a vital ingredient to sustainable development, and that the Creative Industry could play a major role in economic development.

These are great hopes for our country, I must admit, but then let us first go out and vote, and choose the right leader.
