God is Bigger Than What He Has Made

Tomorrow begins TODAY - Dr. Harold J. Sala -
"Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: He calleth them all by names by the greatness of His might, for that He is strong in power; not one faileth." – Isaiah 40:26, KJV

Would it be fair to say in a broad way, that the true measure of a person is his or her accomplishments? For example, novelist James Michener is considered a good author because of the volume and the quality of the writing he has done. The architecture of St. Paul’s Cathedral, along with dozens of other beautiful buildings, made famous the name of Sir Christopher Wren in the 16th century. The Sistine Chapel in Rome along with the works such as The Boy David and La Pieta are synonymous with the excellence of Michelangelo.

We tend to judge an individual by his accomplishment. But Michener is greater than his novels; Sir Christopher Wren is greater than his churches; and Michelangelo greater than his paintings and sculptures.

This being true, God has to be far greater than what He has created. Only recently are we learning how great His work is. Scientists using the Hubble telescope photographed and analyzed a tiny slice of the heavens no wider than a 25th of one degree. That’s a slice about the width of a grain of sand held at arm’s length.

They counted 1,500 to 2,000 galaxies in that tiny space. According to those who participated, these scientists actually counted this number. Then they multiplied this by 360 degrees and concluded that the number of galaxies is 50 billion–five times the formerly accepted figure of ten billion.

Bearing in mind that God is larger than His creation, how big is God? God can no more be separated from what He has done than you can separate the Sistine Chapel from Michelangelo. Those who attempt to remove God from His creative acts fail to see that the Creator and His creation are inseparable.

How big is God? We can’t even figure out how large is the universe that He has created. There is one thing that I do know though: God is infinitely larger than any challenge, any problem which shall ever confront me. When I realize that I, too, am part of His creation, that I am not the result of an accident of chance, that I am here because God created me and allowed me to be born, then I have to reach out by faith and say, "Thank You, God, that You are bigger than my need." And in humility I reach out to Him for help and encouragement.

Take time to read Psalm 8 in your Bible and consider how the vastness of the heavens has intrigued men and women for centuries. Yet the God who created the heavens is also the God who walks with us through the valleys. No wonder David cried out, "O Lord our Lord, how excellent is Thy name in all the earth!" (Psalm 8:9, kjv). Yes, how great Thou art!
