An Envoy’s Unique Gallery

TABLE TALK - Rosalinda Orosa -
Day after day, German Ambassador Herbert and Michelline Jess stared at the bare walls of their spacious living room. Suddenly, a brilliant idea occurred to both: Why not hang paintings on them? They had viewed an exhibition of the eminent artist Manuel D. Baldemor and were duly impressed. Mrs. Jess particularly admired the manner Baldemor had captured the essence of Burgundy (Mrs. Jess is French) as well as the distinctive ambiance of European landmarks. After some time, the envoy asked the artist: Would he consider lending some of his paintings of Germany for an exhibition at the embassy residence? Baldemor graciously acceded, bringing scenes of Hannover, Nuremberg, the famous "Romantic Road", the Castle of Mespelbrunn, Rothenburg, etc.

Forthwith, friends from business, social and diplomatic circles, art collectors and art lovers–even neighbors–came for the opening. As Mr. Jess welcomed them, he announced he would likewise invite other painters so new works could be displayed every three months or so. If the very original idea concretizes, it will enhance the reputation of the Filipino artists, assist them tangibly and yes, turn the envoy’s residence into a unique art gallery!
