Recognizing their efforts to promote the use of digital financial technology in the country, GCash, the country’s leading mobile wallet app, once again honored the pioneering government agencies at the 2022 GCash Digital Excellence Awards at the Blue Leaf Events Pavilion in Taguig City.

GCash president and CEO Martha Sazon said, “It was during the pandemic that the basic things that we took for granted were changed forever, so even the flow of goods and services was almost disrupted. But thankfully we have forward-looking local government units and government-owned and controlled corporations na mabilis mag-adapt.”

This year’s awardees were recognized in seven categories, namely Excellence in Digital Ecosystem Innovation, Excellence in Digital Public Services, Excellence in Digital Public Aid Distribution, Digital Financial Inclusion Champion, Excellence in Adoption to Government Initiatives, Excellence in Digital Sustainability Award, and Excellence in Digital Advancement for MSMEs (a new category for 2022).

City officials present to receive their respective accolades included Makati Mayor Abby Binay-Campos with husband, Rep. Luis Campos; San Fernando, Pampanga Mayor Vilma Caluag; and Tagbilaran City Mayor Jane Yap with husband and former Tagbilaran City Mayor John Geesnell Yap.

BSP Governor Felipe Medalla gave his keynote remarks through a recorded video celebrating the success of the cashless initiatives of the BSP in partnership with GCash, including increased transactions via Instapay and the PalengQR initiative. BSP Deputy Governor Bernadette Romulo-Puyat was also present as one of the awarded presenters.

With an aim to make the Philippines a more financially inclusive and cash-lite society, Ernest Cu, president and CEO of GCash’s parent company, Globe Telecom, said: “The vision was financial inclusion. Looking at GCash’s numbers with 71 million accounts and over six to seven trillion in terms of gross transaction value, which I believe are clear signs of success.”
