Know more about ‘Ka Tunying’
ABS-CBN and DZMM news anchor Anthony “Ka Tunying” Taberna has been part of our daily lives for almost three decades.
He started his career as a part-time news writer for DZEC in 1992 and has since worked his way to the top, making him one of the most admired broadcasters in the country. Today, his shows include Umagang Kay Ganda, Dos Por Dos, TV Patrol, and his newest show, Kuha Mo.
Ka Tunying, together with his lovely wife Rossel, opened Ka Tunying’s Café, a coffeeshop-bakery that now has eight branches.
I asked Rossel to share with us 10 things people don’t know about her husband. Read on to know more about Ka Tunying.
1. He started to show his broadcasting skills at a very young age when he acted as announcer of half court basketball leagues in his hometown, San Antonio, Nueva Ecija.
2. He used to play good basketball. His super-idol is no less than “The Big J” Robert Jaworski.
3. He spent much of his time farming when he was younger. As an evidence to this, his left index finger has a cut from mowing and reaping in the rice field.
4. He did not have any formal swimming lessons. It was out of survival instincts that he learned how to swim, that was after his father threw him in the deep end of a river.
5. He was a dedicated working student (taga-suga ng kalabaw at tagapag-alaga ng baboy). Running for honors, he struggled to balance work and school. He was once late for his Geometry exam and because of time pressure, he peed in his undies but still, he caught up with the rest of the class.
6. He purchased his first vehicle back in 2002. It was a second-hand Toyota Corona from his uncle. It was sold to him for P30,000.
7. It was only three years after working for ABS-CBN that the company found out that he hadn’t finished college. They only discovered this when they were looking for his transcript while processing his papers for promotion.
8. The Magic No. 17. He was 17 years old when he had his first girlfriend. His radio reporter number at DZEC Radio Agila was also 17. And the total number of girlfriends he had? You guessed it, 17!
9. His favorite novelist is John Grisham. He could spend hours and hours reading legal thrillers. With this interest, people mistake him as a lawyer at times.
10. Sweet irony. When he first applied for a US visa, he was denied. But things turned around when he was given the Ninoy Aquino Fellowship for Journalism Award, which sponsored him to travel around seven states in America.
