For the love of PGH

We believe in the ideals presented by the lines “Art for art’s sake” and “Beauty is its own excuse for being.” Yet, if the creation of beauty benefits the least of our brothers in their plight, then art has served a most lofty purpose, indeed.

A perfect example of art serving charity is the fundraising affair — a live and silent auction — hosted recently by the PGH Medical Foundation, Inc. (PGHMFI) at the Manila Polo Club. Your columnist was especially happy to serve as the emcee for the Fifth Biennial Auction — consisting of paintings, prints and pieces of sculpture — that was held for the benefit of the Philippine General Hospital’s (PGH) Charity Patients’ Medical Fund. 

The PGHMFI was established to assist the PGH in achieving its noble mission of providing excellent health care for its indigent patients. Some of the works that went on the block for the live and silent auction were creations of the country’s notable artists: Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, Juvenal Sanso, Ramon Orlina, Ephraim Samson, Araceli Dans, Hermes Alegre and National Artists Arturo Luz and Abdul Imao. 

Seen at the event were PGHMFI chairman Dr. Greg Alvior Jr., president Dr. Edward Tordesillas and corporate secretary Lolita Mirpuri, artist Betsy Westendorp, and Muebles Italiano president and CEO Noel Gonzales.
