The Myth of Prometheus and Pandora

- The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -  The Marie Eugenie Theater of the Assumption (METTA) of Assumption College proudly presents The Myth of Prometheus and Pandora on Sept. 5, 7, 14, 19, 21 and 28; and Oct. 5.

The drama-musical is an allegorical tale about a hero’s journey towards self-discovery and servant leadership. Prometheus discovers his calling to protect and champion humans. He answers his call to action, by giving humans the gift of fire, which enables them to cook, keep warm, create tools, weapons, and crafts for progress.

The original music and poetry of the production came from the myths of Prometheus and Pandora. The musical features Paolo O’Hara, Russell Legaspi, JV Katipunan and the Theater Arts students of Assumption College. The production is a fusion of modern text and original poetry, written by Dr. Pinky Valdes and Ana Valdes-Lim. It is produced by Metta, Assumption College with set design by Bely Ygot and music composed by Dr. Pinky Valdes.

The musical is about a hero’s call to create the first humans out of clay and water. Prometheus steals food from the gods’ altar to give to humans. He steals fire from the altar to give humans the gift of fire. From the gift of fire, humans learn to cook, keep warm, make tools, weapons and crafts. The gift of fire is celebrated each time the torch is passed in the Olympics. Prometheus becomes their champion and protector. Zeus is enraged by his actions and exacts his revenge on humans by sending seven evils and diseases through the first woman, Pandora. Prometheus learns that a servant leader sacrifices and suffers in a hero’s journey, but finds joy in his sacrifice. In the end, Prometheus is hero, protector, and champion of all humans.
