MANILA, Philippines – Billionaire businessman Andrew Tan of Megaworld Corp is among the latest local figures to perform the ALS bucket challenge.
Tan, the Philippines' third richest man with an estimated net worth of $4.6 billion, branded amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) as a “threat to humanity.”
"I support the important cause of the ALS Association to promote awareness about Lou Gehrig's disease. That is a threat to humanity. That's why I'm here to take this ice bucket challenge. At the same time, I will make a donation to the movement," he said.
The business tycoon then called out Asian Institute of Management president Steven DeKrey, Accenture Philippines country managing director Lito Tayag and McDonald's Philippines president and CEO Kenneth Yang to perform the same challenge.
The ice bucket challenge aims to raise awareness on ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease, a condition that affects nerve cells. It has become a phenomenon on social media with countless celebrities worldwide performing the challenge.
Reports said around $70 million have been raised thanks to the challenge since July 29.
