Defense lawyer says witness was a conspirator in massacre

- Dennis Carcamo -

MANILA, Philippines – The defense panel has accused prosecution witness Lakmodin Saliao as part of a conspiracy to carry out the Maguindanao massacre that left 57 people dead in November last year.

During the cross examination, lawyer Gregorio Narvasa tagged Saliao as being one of the conspirators in the massacre.

"He is not a witness. He is a participant of the conspiracy," Narvasa said.

The defense lawyer, who is part of principal accused Andal Ampatuan Jr.'s legal team, also argued that Saliao played a "vital role" having communicated directly with the younger Ampatuan who allegedly led the killing.

"We are also wondering why he (Saliao) is not considered by the prosecution for indictment," Narvasa told Quezon City Regional Trial Court Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes during the proceedings.

State prosecutors, on the other hand, said Saliao is not the accused in the case.

For his part, Saliao told the court he knew that the Ampatuan clan has connections with the local police.
