Appreciating new laws
The headline “Laws signed for evacuation sites, deferred student loan fees” (Dec. 7, 2024) highlights the importance of policies that curate efforts to “address the long-standing issue of schools being used as evacuation centers” and “allows the disaster-affected students and their families to have a breathing space as they recuperate and rebuild their lives.” These steps are instrumental as they demonstrate a commitment to addressing the immediate needs of vulnerable communities during times of catastrophe.
As a Filipino, I believe that erecting evacuation centers in various locations can resolve high-volume emergency needs by providing safe, verified locations for individuals and families during disasters. Taking small steps in the right direction by prioritizing the construction of these facilities can ensure that communities are better prepared to face the challenges caused by calamities. Investing in such initiative would not only improve emergency response but also minimize the risk to lives and property. Failing to act could expose to or perpetuate vulnerabilities that leave many unprepared in the face of future emergencies. This promising effort would offer a vessel of comfort as well as peace of mind for those in the general populace.
Furthermore, given that the Philippines is located near the Pacific Ring of Fire and is prone to a variety of natural disasters, the need for safer evacuation centers and enhanced student financial aid becomes even more pressing. Moreover, these new laws (Republic Act No. 12076, or the Ligtas Pinoy Centers Act and Republic Act No. 12077, or the Student Loan Payment Moratorium During Disasters and Emergencies Act) would not only address immediate needs during emergencies but also foster long-term resilience for communities and families.
In conclusion, I also believe it is incumbent upon us that we act with unity and shared responsibility to bolster these safety nets for all Filipinos, as “safety” is, after all, everyone’s business. – JHON STEVEN ESPENIDO, Surigao City [email protected]
