Maria’s pride is Phl’s shame

MANILA, Philippines — Dmitry Muratov and Maria Ressa thoroughly deserve the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for their courageous stand against repressive regimes. Maria should be rightfully appreciated and we should be proud of her.

But here is the disturbing message for us ordinary Filipinos: Putin’s regime has no doubt been repressive and murderous, but for the Duterte government to be viewed by the Nobel Committee – and no doubt the rest of the world save perhaps Russia and China – in the same vein, is a new low for our country. – Bobby Romulo [email protected]
