We condemn the murder of Dr. Dreyfuss Perlas

The Philippine Star

(Statement of the Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity, University of the Philippines College of Medicine)

The Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity strongly condemns the violent killing of Dr. Dreyfuss Perlas, who was slain while performing his duties as a Doctor to the Barrios and as the Municipal Health Officer of Sapad, Lanao Del Norte.

We unite in mourning with the numerous brothers and sisters of the Mu Sigma Phi in the DTTB Program and the rest of the physicians who have committed themselves to the spirit of self-denying service as they provide quality healthcare to the depressed, the marginalized, and the underserved.

We laud their altruistic dedication in contributing to the universal goal of providing health for all, and ultimately, in building our nation.

As a medical fraternity in the UP College of Medicine, we have encouraged our members to join the ranks of the DTTB program to champion the vision/mission of our college to commit our graduates in community-oriented service especially for the underserved even going to the extent of painstakingly persuading parents to allow their sons and daughters in this valuable and selfless endeavor.  The oblation of DTTB are sacrifices of their families as well.

We impel the national government and the local government units in Lanao Del Norte to provide all means for the transparent investigation of his death and for the swift delivery of justice to his family, the Doctors to the Barrios, and the constituents of Sapad.

We urge all local government units in the country to maintain an environment of security and peace so that no more of our colleagues will be harmed as they serve our fellow Filipinos.

DREYFUSS PERLAS
