Cristine Coyiuto, spectacular in Gershwin’s Concerto in F

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Metro Manila Concert Orchestra’s rendition of Bernstein’s Overture from “Candide,” under outstanding, versatile, dynamic conductor Josefino “Chino” Toledo, sparkled with vibrancy and exuberance highlighting the opera – buffa melodies.

Copland’s Four Dances from “Rodeo” bristled with Old West ambiance; Dvorak’s Suite “Americana” likewise conveyed the same atmosphere while reflecting bits of Czech folk music.

In sum, the predominantly young ensemble played with exceptional robustness and technical proficiency.

Veering away from standard classics, Cristine Coyiuto, the pianists’ pianist, shone in an astonishing new light in Gershwin’s Concerto in F, jazz themes, syncopations and swift staccatos played with utmost skill, tonal clarity and the git-up-and-go American spirit. There should be no applause between movements, but a deafening one ensued after the first movement, Cristine amazingly capturing the essence and sparkling wit of Gershwin’s piece. Further the supremely gifted pianist obviously reveled in the infectiously riotous music she and the orchestra were creating, with Cristine virtually dancing as she kept shaking her head and torso to the electrifying rhythms, thus giving credence to her choice of Gershwin.

Her spectacular performance garnered a standing ovation to which she responded with a charming arrangement of “Embraceable You” replete with tantalizing runs. The finale was a joyous medley of Christmas songs, with conductor and orchestra players donning red Audi caps presaging the festive atmosphere of the holiday season.
