A letter to our soldiers
I think we Filipinos owe our men-in-uniform a debt of gratitude. Now that we all have a better appreciation and understanding of what they do for our well-being, and society for that matter, we should let them know that we look up to them with awe and respect. We never fail to remember what they have visibly done in the days after supertyphoon Yolanda, where some of them were victims themselves, but prioritized saving victims with the hope that others would do the same for their own families.
Last year was truly a test of trials, challenges and endurance. Many gave up their lives in the Zamboanga siege, Bohol earthquake, NPA attacks, Abu Sayyaf encounters, to extremists and other criminal elements which is an effort they give in support to police authorities. Recent NPA attacks have again claimed their lives together with civilian victims. Daily, they are deployed in all the corners of the archipelago on a 24/7 duty, patrolling, battling, containing the enemies of our democracy.
They bear heat and unfriendly environment in the Ayungin Shoal, oftentimes deprived of food and drink because of Chinese restrictions, but still happy when their superiors and fellow soldiers never fail to give them support and sustenance. A burger meal, pie and soft drinks already made their day in the lonely enclaves of Ayungin shoal.
From air to ground, our soldiers have manifested the nobility of soldiery. They are men and women who work for our country and people with commitment and true devotion. It feels great having them around. They are not only a source of national pride, but also of hope. For soldiers, the sun will always shine after a storm, new beginnings after a hard day’s work. – Onofre S. Katigbak, Diokno Highway, Bgy San Gregorio, Laurel, Batangas
