Letters to the Editor

Ecology rehab efforts

Gina Lopez - The Philippine Star

Alex Magno and Mary Ann Reyes have both written columns on the same issue. For some reason both have decided to focus on operations directly connected with me. Alex asked for an explanation. Here it is:

In 2008 upon the request of Ming Ramos I signed a MOA with the DENR to co-manage the cleaning of the Pasig River. At that time my initial take was that the major strategy for cleaning the Pasig River was solid waste management. Accordingly I requested help from PRRC for machines which would be able to recycle the garbage and turn it into revenue for the communities. We have already built 4 MRFs. All MRFs will be ready by December 2013. We have taken strong remedial action to improve on our operations.

In my first three years as chair of Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission – I have been focused on relocating and fixing up the easements. The wonder of Estero de Paco is now being replicated in 16 esteros as I write this letter. My people work long and hard. In the esteros that we have cleaned, there has been a significant impact in terms of social and economic benefits. There has been no flooding and a 40% reduction in crime.

La Mesa – I went into the La Mesa project because it was the last remaining watershed in Metro Manila which affects the water supply of 12 million people. We have generated a total of P101 million for the watershed and P247 million for the Eco Park. This does not include the millions of pesos of airtime ABS CBN has donated towards this cause.

We did it without asking anything in return. The only thing we get is a 15% management fee (which is approved) and that is to cover administrative costs. The rest of the money goes to running the park and to maintain the La Mesa Watershed.

To date the La Mesa Eco Park continues to win awards. It is a haven for residents of Quezon City – getting visitors and educating students from schools from as far as Baguio and Mindanao.

I went into the La Mesa Watershed, the Eco Park and the Pasig River – with a pure heart – wanting only the best for my country. Alex Magno and Mary Ann Reyes should perhaps shift stance and applaud efforts which in fact build the country.
