Let's be vigilant vs terrorists

- June S. Casejo, Malate, Manila - The Philippine Star

The terrorist attack in Libya last Sept. 13, 2012 killing diplomats could have been part of the terrorists’ plans to start sowing violence again to countries known to be US allies. These recent attacks could have been also stemmed from a recent crudely produced movie against Islam and the portrayal of Prophet Mohammed involving indiscretion in sex which the Muslim world had condemned.

Our country is home to the Abu Sayyaf and other extremist groups with known associations with the al-Qaeda. It will come as no surprise if these groups sympathize with international terrorists in support to their cause.

It is good the government is quick to respond and has deployed added security in the US Embassy and the Coast Guard is doubling its patrol in our coastal waters. Let us also give ourselves the proper warning to stay away from places which could be targets of such attacks. This is not to sound off alarm, but all of us, better prepared, will feel safer.

Terrorists pick no time or place to stage its attacks like what recently happened in a carnival in Davao City where a grenade was thrown at frolickers. Let’s face the inconvenience of body/bag searches in public places and commercial establishments. This is better than putting the blame afterwards on authorities whom some may accuse of falling short of their job.
