Journalistic skills

- Claudia Marie M. Torres, University of the East, Manila -

Kudos to the darling of the Senate, Senator Loren Legarda, for not losing her journalistic roots in the ongoing impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

As a student of journalism, I intently watch the television coverage of the impeachment as part of my class requirements in media law and ethics. Watching the trial reminds me of the Philippine Journalist Code of Ethics, where one of the pledges is: I shall presume persons accused of crime being innocent until proven otherwise.

We have been told many times that if one cannot beat the system, especially in politics, better join the system. Seeing Loren’s behavior proves that there can be exceptions. Her questioning of Land Registration Authority (LRA) Administrator Eulalio Diaz III is a good example of her objectivity that has often been espoused to us in class.

No wonder Loren remains number one in the hearts of our people.
