MANILA, Philippines - Sidewalks are for pedestrians for their mobility and safety. Through sidewalks we need not use the streets, thus avoiding vehicular accidents.
But still there are many sidewalks being used illegally by residents and business establishments. The Metro Manila Development Authority should continue its project demolishing sidewalk obstructions. There are still many obstructions around the metropolis. Good example of illegally using sidewalks for business purposes are a five-star hotel along UN Avenue in Manila and a bank at the corner of Ayala and Sen. Gil Puyat avenues in Makati. They are using the sidewalk as their driveway. Passersby are forced to use the street. Are they allowed by the concerned authority? Can the MMDA check this?
