MANILA, Philippines - Last Nov. 23 Atty. Jose C. Sison lamented in his column “Beginning of the End” the apparent road the Liberal Party is taking towards self-destruction. Coincidentally, on the same day, a columnist in the Philippine STAR’s rival publication (Yes, I actually buy everyday the two newspapers — it gives me perverse pleasure when I spot from time to time two conflicting versions of one and the same news) delved on the same subject, titling it “The Great Forgetting.”
It would indeed be a great tragedy for the country and the Filipinos if a few people in the Liberal Party would be allowed to frustrate the hopes of the great number of Filipinos who long for an end to transactional politics. The tandem of Noynoy and Mar embody our hopes that is why I, too, share the apprehensions. Having been in this world for 70 years now, I have seen the deprivations under Marcos, Erap and now GMA.
But like Omar Khayam, could not we “shatter to bits” this emerging “Sorry Scheme of Things Entire and then remould it nearer to the heart’s desire”? — JESUS V. LANUZA, Las Piñas City
