MANILA, Philippines - The news that world champion Manny Pacquiao is going to run for congressman next year draws vehement reaction from people who think he is better-off in the ring than in politics. I take the minority side.
In life there are many roads to tread. One’s choice, right or wrong, can only be judged or respected. In the final count, only he can prove them wrong and vindicate his judgment. In the beginning many people perhaps thought Manny can’t box. He has proven them wrong. His courage, diligence, persistence, ambition, and his faith, have carried him through — character traits of great men in history. Many said he can’t beat de la Hoya; then came Hatton. If you work hard and believe, “quixotic” dreams can come true.
When this writer first ran for councilor in Pasay City, many people said “what will this guy do in the council, play old songs and read commercials?” Manny Pacquiao for sure has never been a Demosthenes or Cicero debating club member, may not even pass a course in speech, but he possesses something inborn, something which is not taught and learned in school: genuine love and affection for the common people. Debating skills and English can be learned like boxing. Sincerity and feelings for people are innate. That is why street upbringing can sometimes be better than university education.
In the matter of parliamentary procedures, that too can be learned. This writer is willing to coach him “Roberts Rules of Order.” Damn the torpedoes, Manny. Go for it! — Fmr. Senator EDDIE ILARDE, 203 FBT, Polaris St., Bel-Air, Makati City
