Mapúa’s civil engineering program recognized by UK’s ICE

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The prestigious Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) of the United Kingdom has recognized the civil engineering program of Mapúa University.

The ICE is an independent professional association for civil engineers in the UK. It is based in London and has over 92,000 members, of whom three quarters are located in the UK, while the rest are located in more than 150 other countries.

With the ICE’s recognition, Mapúa’s civil engineering graduates will no longer need to apply for an academic assessment to gain an ICE professional qualification.

Recognition is given to civil engineering degrees accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the United States-based ABET (ABET-EAC; www.abet.org), ensuring graduates of the programs their global professional qualification.

Mapúa’s civil engineering program is identified by the ICE as one that fully satisfies the educational base for an incorporated engineer (IEng) and partially satisfies the educational base for a chartered engineer (CEng).

Professional registration as IEng or CEng demonstrates that graduates have the expertise and commitment to their profession, which meets the UK standard for professional engineering competence.

The IEng, where Mapúa civil engineering graduates now qualify, maintains and manages applications for current and developing technology, and may undertake engineering design, development, manufacture, construction and operation.

The CEng, on the other hand, develops solutions to engineering problems using new or existing technologies through innovation, creativity and change, and may have technical accountability for complex systems with significant levels of risk (www.engc.org.uk).

The CEng is the higher qualification between the two and carries slightly better package of benefits and work opportunities than the IEng.

A program of Further Learning is required for a Mapúa graduate to complete the educational base for CEng.

ICE also offers free membership to students of its recognized engineering institutions. Mapúans can now enjoy unlimited access to engineering learning resources after signing up, including ICE’s online Infrastructure Learning Hub, which enables them to gain more knowledge about civil engineering, innovation, and development through recorded lectures, webinars, and case studies.

The ICE got their Royal Charter in 1828. And in 1975, the institution was named the leading institution for the civil engineering profession in the UK.

Last October 2018, Mapúa University earned a spot in Rank 401 – 450 of the 2019 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asia University Rankings. To date, the University has the most number of ABET-accredited programs in a single campus with 11 programs accredited by ABET’s Engineering Accreditation Commission and three (3) programs accredited by ABET’s Computing Accreditation Commission. Mapúa also holds the most number of engineering programs that are declared by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as Centers of Excellence in the country.

The new recognition from UK’s ICE is a testament to the University’s commitment to injecting the global standards in its education, breeding graduates of high-caliber ready for their world of practice.
