Taguig school gets SPED classroom, cyber-wellness training

MANILA, Philippines — A public elementary school in Taguig City received a special education (SPED) classroom and cyber-wellness training for teachers from telecommunications company Globe. 

Globe general counsel Froilan Castelo said the company corporate and legal services group chose the EM’s Signal Village Elementary School (ESVES) as part of Globe’s employee volunteerism program. 

“We wanted to extend our assistance outside the walls of our office and serve our immediate local community which is Taguig. When we visited ESVES, we realized that while the school is well-supported by the local government, it can use a bit more help on SPED,” he said. 

“We also wanted to conduct the digital citizenship talks because we felt responsible for disseminating very useful information to the teaches who are already within our reach. Being considered as leaders in the school, the teachers have to be in tune with digital trends and lifestyles so that they can teach their students more effectively,” he added. 

The new SPED classroom is expected to benefit the 40 SPED students enrolled in the school. 

Thirty grade school teachers also participated in the workshops on the Data Privacy Act and the Digital Thumbprint Program, Globe’s flagship cyber-wellness education training for teachers and students.  

It was designed to increase the students’ knowledge of digital citizenship and cyber-safety by taking a critical look at their online behavior and helping them develop insights into the influences of the online world and the choices they are making.

Financial literacy

Meanwhile, students at St. Scholastica’s Academy and St. John’s Institute in Bacolod City recently underwent a financial literacy program organized by Allianz PNB Life Insurance Inc. 

Allianz PNB Life Insurance, a partnership between the Philippine National Bank and German insurer Allianz SE, tapped Jong Merida of the Wealth Management Center for Communications and Research to conduct the financial planning seminars. 

He emphasized the importance of having a holistic approach to education, including the development of the youth’s ability to manage their money well. 

“We aim to prepare the youth to be financially res- ponsible and to develop an entrepreneurial mindset by providing them with relevant finance principles and an understanding of the financial markets,” Allianz PNB Life distribution partner head and event lead Bernadette Pantoja said.
