DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines – A Department of Education (DepEd) reading books hub is up for construction here starting first quarter of 2015 in a bid to bring back to students the habit of reading books instead of indulging themselves in text messaging.
Report from the City Information Office said that Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Lourdes Servito said Mayor Belen Fernandez has already given her approval for the construction of a library hub at the DepEd Division Office.
“We are happy that Mayor Belen is supporting our drive of having our library hub and even allocated P5 million from the city’s coffer to be used for the construction of a two-storey building in a DepEd lot at the City Division Office,” Servito said.
The project is a nationwide program of DepEd that is being made available to all school divisions so that they can promote the culture of reading to their pupils and students.
Servito said that Dagupan City is a medium school division. As such, DepEd will be providing us around 50,000 to 200,000 books worth P5 million, she added.
But she said that they need to build a building where they can place and keep all these books as a requirement.
Servito said that in order to preserve the books from getting molds and so that the next generations will still be able to use them, the books must be placed in a plastic bin.
“These books will be lent to schools for their use and once they are done, they are going to return these at the hub for use by other schools,” she said.
Servito said the library hub will promote and develop pervasive reading culture among children who are now addicted to texting.
“The children are getting addicted to texting and this is one thing which we would like to correct by developing their interest in reading with the help of the library hub which will be very accessible to all,” Servito said.
The books can be used by both elementary and secondary schools.
