UP, Ateneo students granted Globe-SingTel scholarships

MANILA, Philippines - Four sophomore college students from the country’s top universities were chosen as recipients of this year’s Globe-SingTel Undergraduate Scholarship Program after undergoing a comprehensive and stringent screening process.

Spearheaded by Globe Telecom and its major shareholder Singapore Telecommunications Ltd., the scholarship program serves as an avenue for the two companies to spot talents for future leadership roles as well as harness young talents in the field of technology.  “As part of our transformation initiative, one of our goals is to create a surplus of talents and leaders in the company as we are in an environment and business that is constantly changing and thus the need for new talents and leaders,” Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu said.

Those awarded with the scholarship grants were Charles Joshua Alba, 16, a second-year BS Computer Engineering student from the University of the Philippines, Cyril Vinz Bana, 18, a second-year Mechanical Engineering student from UP; Pauline Hannah Dizon, 17, a BS Industrial Engineering sophomore student also from UP; and Miguel Franco Ignacio Hamoy, 18, an Economics sophomore student from the Ateneo de Manila University.

The entire selection process initially involved more than 100 applicants who went through a series of assessment procedure that included a one-on-one interview with Mark Chong, CEO of International SingTel. 

The scholarship grant will cover tuition and other miscellaneous fees as well as book, meal, transportation and living allowances for the entire duration of their college years.  The scholars, upon graduation, will also be given an internship stint in both Globe and SingTel and will take part of the management development program of Globe or SingTel.
