Phl teams rule int’l math olympiad in Indonesia
MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines’ young math wizards again shone in the 6th Asian Inter-Cities Teenager’s Mathematics Olympiad held in West Java, Indonesia that culminated last Sunday.
Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines, said the Philippines was declared over-all champion in the team contests, with two Philippine teams, Team A and D, bagging team championships.
The Filipino math whiz kids also hauled in their own share of individual gold, silver, and bronze medals.
Adrian Reginald Sy of St. Jude Catholic School, Clyde Wesley Ang of Chiang Kai Shek College, and Kelsey Lim Tiong Soon of Grace Christian College won gold medals for Team Philippines.
Jose Alfonso Ignacio Mirabueno of Philippine Science High School-Davao campus, Nathanael Joshua Balete of St. Stephen’s High School, and Isabella Mae Tan of St. Jude, and Ethan Riley Chan of Zamboanga Chong Hua won silver medals.
Winning a bronze was Gene Go, Jr. of Zamboanga Chong Hua.
Eight got merit awards namely Christopher Banzon of Makati Science, Matthew Angelo Isidro of St. Jude, Jason Carlo Carranceja of Grace Christian, Terrence Brian Tsai of Chiang Kai Shek, Janine Michelle Yu of Philippine Institute of Quezon City, Shawn Gabriel Cabanes of Zamboanga Chong Hua, Elijamin Wolfgang Claveria of Philippine Science High School-Main campus, and Xavier Jefferson Ray Go of Zamboanga Chong Hua.
Host country Indonesia tied the Philippines with 3 gold medals, followed by Thailand with 2, and Malaysia and Bulgaria garnering one each.
The AITMO had a total of 128 student contestants and participating countries were Bulgaria, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand.
In the silver haul tally, China had 2, Taiwan had 5, Indonesia 4, Thailand 3, Bulgaria 1, Malaysia 2.
In the bronze tally, Bulgaria won 6, China 1, Taiwan 3, Thailand 6, Indonesia 3, Iran 1, and Malaysia 1.
Champion Philippine Team A was composed of Jason Carlo Carranceja, Terence Brian Tsai, Isabella Mae Tan, and Ethan Riley Chan.
Champion Philippine Team D was composed of Adrian Reginald Sy, Clyde Wesley Ang, Nathanael Balete, and Matthew Angelo Isidro).
