MANILA, Philippines - The 112 members of the Philippine Robotics Team showed just how strong the Filipino spirit could be, after bagging big awards at the recently held World Robot Olympiad (WRO) 2013 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The competition was held last Nov. 13 to 18, only a few days after super typhoon Haiyan hit the country.

Competing with the theme, “Promotion and Prevention of World Heritage Sites,” the Philippine Robotics Team took home two silver awards for Open/Creative category with representatives from the elementary level of Dr. Yanga’s College Inc. for “Tubbataha Reef“ entry and junior high school level for “Banaue Rice Terraces.”

The Philippine team, as represented by Grace Christian College, also won two bronze awards for both junior high school and college levels of Open/ Creative category for “Tubbataha Reef” entry.

Joining the delegation was director Elizabeth Fontanilla, Science Education Institute of the Department of Science and Technology.

The World Robot Olympiad is an annual international robotics competition, where students are challenged in many different levels and across multiple curriculum-relevant subjects.

The WRO strengthens skills required for surviving the 21st century, but also fosters human values such as teamwork, innovation, creativity, and problem solving. A total of 392 teams from over 36 countries participated in this year’s competition.
