Taguig hosts 10th Int’l Math and Science Olympiad

MANILA, Philippines - Taguig City will host the 10th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary Students (IMSO) that is expected to draw participants from 18 countries all over the world.

Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano said the city will play host to the tilt’s closing and awarding ceremony to be held today (Nov. 28) at the Samsung Hall of the SM Aura at the Bonifacio Global City. The event will be live-streamed on Taguig City’s Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/taguigcity).

Cayetano said about 450 delegates from countries including the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, South Africa, China, Taiwan, China, Indonesia, India, Nigeria, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Kazakhstan, Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Bangladesh have particpated in the said competition, which started on Nov. 25 in Alfonso, Cavite and will be concluded tomorrow (Nov. 29).

“This is a very rare opportunity for Taguig City to be part of an international endeavor that would help young people with exceptional skills to further their interests in Math and Science. It also showcases our efforts here in Taguig to improve the quality of education in the public school system,” Mayor Cayetano said.

The country’s representatives to the tilt are composed of elementary students from public and private schools. The Philippines first hosted the IMSO in Naga City in 2011.

Last July, Joshua Cuballes, a third year student at the Senator Renato “Companero” Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School (SRCC- MSTHS), won one of the 23 gold medals handed out to winners in the recently-concluded Asia Cup Mathematics Olympiad held at the Buddhist Mau Fung Memorial College.

One of his teammates, SRCC-MSTHS’s Daryl Joe Santos, also won a bronze medal in the same competition.

“This is clear and convincing proof that the quality of education in our city is indeed world-class,” Mayor Cayetano said.

The Philippine delegation in the event won two gold medals in the said competition, which included participants from top schools in China, Singapore, Macau, Indonesia and South Korea.

Aside from the gold medal, Cuballes also won a bronze medal in the Gifted Mathematicians “Green World Cup” International Tournament Finals 2013 where his two other teammates – Santos and Marc Daniel Jamindang – also received merit awards.

Jamindang and Santos also received a bronze medal and Merit Award, respectively, in the 22nd King of Mathematics International Tournament Finals 2013.
