Singapore now accepting applications for scholarship

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Singapore Embassy is accepting applications for the Singapore scholarship for academic year 2014/2015. The scholarship is awarded by the Singapore Government and is tenable at the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the Singapore Management University (SMU). Except for Medicine, Dentistry, Architecture and Law, all other disciplines are open to recipients of the scholarship.

The Singapore scholarship was announced by then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong at the 6th ASEAN Summit in Hanoi in December 1998 to provide more opportunities for good students in ASEAN to obtain a good education. It underlines Singapore’s firm belief that human resource development is key to economic development, and that training and education is vital to success in this age of globalization.

Each award is tenable for three to four years of tertiary study (depending on the discipline), and covers return airfare, full tuition fees, an accommodation allowance, and a living allowance of S$4,300 (approximately P150,500) per annum. Scholars are selected on the basis of academic merit and places will be allocated by open competition. They are expected to return home to contribute to the development of their countries upon graduation.

Applicants must be Filipino citizen with excellent academic records and a good command of English. A recipient of the scholarship may not concurrently hold any other scholarship, fellowship, grant or award without prior approval of the Singapore Government. Applicants must be in their first or second year college/university or are now completing their final year in high school. Nominees will undergo an entrance examination results and will be further shortlisted through an interview.

Completed applications forms (available at the Singapore Embassy or downloadable from the website: http://www.mfa.gov.sg/scp) must be submitted to the Singapore Embassy in Manila by  Dec. 6, 2013.
