MANILA, Philippines - Every country strives to promote sports. Not only to enhance athletic competitiveness at the elite level, but also to improve the fitness and general wellbeing of its population. The Philippines notwithstanding, Sports has evolved from mere play and competition — transcending across various sectors of society and businesses.
This week on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9, the Sport Management Council of the Philippines (Sportphil), in partnership with Enderun College, will hold a two-day seminar called the Sport Management Boot Camp.
The “Boot Camp†will give participants an overview of the unique aspects of managing sports organizations and introduce various facets of sports businesses such as leisure, recreation and events management.
Sportphil was founded by Geraldine Bernardo, a former national athlete for Dragon Boat and one-time executive director of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). She explains, “Why ‘Boot Camp?’ Because the seminar will be a high-intensity two-day crash course! Our speakers — mostly former athletes -- are known proponents in the industry, with decades of experience behind them as educators and practitioners.â€
Among them, Bernardo Atienza, who is the deputy executive director of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, professors Oscar Santelices and Ronualdo Dizer from the University of the Philippines College of Human Kinetics; and Olympic swimmer Rene Concepcion, an accomplished international lecturer for Sport Management and organizer of swimming and triathlon events.
Sportphil is recognized as a member of the Asian Association of Sport Management (AASM) and as an affiliate of the Asian Council of Exercise and Sports Science (ACESS).
The collaboration between Sportphil and Enderun for the seminar has been in the works since April this year. “Our organization has partnered with Enderun because it is a highly progressive institution. They pull out all the stops to bring in the best programs and are seriously considering offering subjects related to Sport Management as part of their curricula.â€
One of the aims of Sportphil is to promote research and innovation in the field of sport management, sports science and governance
The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has recently given the Sport Management seminar its endorsement, in accordance with the provisions of the Republic Act 7722 otherwise known as the “Higher Education Act of 1994.â€
The sound investment for the two-day Boot Camp is P5,800 inclusive of course materials, food, site experience and certificate. Pre-registration is preferred.
