More schools seen shifting to innovative teaching framework

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Central Visayan Institute Foundation-Dynamic Learning Program (CVIF-DLP) continues to generate strong interest among schools nationwide with over 400 public and private schools shifting to this innovative teaching framework from the traditional one this coming school year.

Using the formula, 80 percent student activity, four academic days and zero homework, this innovative teaching framework developed by Ramon Magsaysay awardees Dr. Chris Bernido and Dr. M. Victoria Carpio-Bernido has been proven to improve students’ overall academic performance.

Being propagated by staunch education advocates, Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) and PLDT-Smart Foundation (PSF) since 2011, the CVIF-DLP learning method is now being implemented by over 200 public and private elementary schools nationwide.

About 480 participants representing 130 schools all over the country joined in the 4th Workshop on CVIF-DLP held last April 23 to 25 at the De La Salle University in Manila.

“The good number of attendees to the recent workshop is indicative of the strong interest of schools in CVIF-DLP.  They’ve seen that it worked in improving the overall academic performance of students despite the lack of expert teachers that tend to be a problem for most schools in the country,” said Ramon Isberto, Smart Public Affairs Group head.

“We are proud to be partners with the Bernidos in helping enhance the quality of Philippine education, molding our young people academically so they are equipped to compete with the global jobs marketplace,” added Isberto.

“The CVIF-DLP, based on learning pedagogies, and physiological, psychological and neurological facts and findings sought to equalize learning opportunities among students regardless of the socioeconomic status or the location of the school,” said Tess Bacuñgan, CVIF-DLP program director.

The CVIF-DLP was first instituted in CVIF, a private school that is owned by the Bernido family in the fourth class municipality of Jagna in Bohol as a means to improve the academic performance of the students.

When Smart and PSF came in to help propagate this non-traditional mode of learning in 2011, 34 public schools, including the entire division in Cagayan de Oro City, adopted CVIF-DLP for the school year 2011-2012.

The next school year, the entire divisions of Basilan and Lamitan in the Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) implemented the program along with schools in Sagay City and Negros Oriental.

The same program was implemented in a number of private schools including Claret School in Zamboanga City and the University of the East in Manila.

Starting this June, five divisions of Pangasinan, or 307 schools, as well as public schools in Dipolog City and Mandaluyong City will be implementing CVIF-DLP. More schools are seen implementing the program this school year.

Smart, in collaboration with partners in the academe, government and the private sector, aims to increase the access of target communities to learning opportunities through technology.
