MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Education (DepEd) will participate in a gathering of educators to tackle the development of strategies for visually-impaired students.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said DepEd welcomed the effort of non-governmental organization Resources for the Blind, Inc., to hold a congress on teaching strategies for students with visual impairment.

The congress. slated to be held this on Oct. 26 to 28 at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cebu City, will gather educators especially those serving students with visual impairment, and discuss initiatives on collaborative and inclusive strategies of teaching Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to visually-impaired students.

“We thank the Resources for the Blind for this very timely initiative which will surely have a positive impact on learners who have special learning needs,” said Luistro.

The education chief explained that such event will lead to the empowerment of students with visual impairment because of the benefit they can derive from learning highly technical subjects such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

These initiatives, Luistro said, run parallel with the goals of the DepEd to make basic education truly responsive to and inclusive of all learners.

The congress also aims to inspire teachers and instill a sense of pride in their work for ministering to the educational needs of students who are differently-abled.

DepEd’s Special Education Division and Bureau of Elementary Education are coordinating with the Christian Blind Mission, the Perkins International Program and the Lions Club international Fund in support of the congress.
