GBF grants scholarships to St. Stephen students
MANILA, Philippines - True to its commitment to uplift youth development through education, the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation (GBF), partnered with St. Stephen’s High School by awarding ten scholarships to promising students. Elizabeth Gokongwei, a member of GBF’s board of trustees and an alumnus of St. Stephen’s, hopes to uphold the school’s mission, which is to provide quality education based on Christian principles. Granting 10 scholarships to deserving pupils is a fitting way of reinforcing this goal.
To formalize the partnership between GBF and St. Stephen’s, a memorandum of agreement was signed recently at the 43rd Boardroom of the Robinsons Equitable Tower.
“Our faculty and guidance councilors go through a strenuous process of screening these deserving students,” explained Judy G. Tan, principal of St. Stephens. Apart from having proof of financial need, candidates must belong to the top 20 percent of the current Grade 6 St. Stephen’s High School batch. To keep the scholarship, awardees should also maintain their academic standing and be a part of the top 30 percent of their group. GBF will grant a full scholarship to each of the selected students; this will cover six school years from Grades 7 to 12.
“St. Stephen aims to provide quality education and all of our scholars must be able to embody the school’s vision,” Tan continues. “While we want to produce students who are after God’s own heart and are capable of being lighthouses in the community, we also want to make sure that they are competent enough to face the challenges of the real world. Having GBF’s scholarship will provide more of our students with this amazing opportunity.” The Right Reverend Bishop Dixie Taclobao, chairman of St. Stephen’s board of trustees, was likewise enthusiastic about the school’s partnership with GBF. “I believe that this is a very strong partnership because it is forged with the best of intentions. The Gokongwei Brothers Foundation has helped a lot of bright individuals reach their goals, so it’s great that they’ve extended help to the students of St. Stephen’s.” St. Stephen’s High School will have its 100th year anniversary on 2017, and beginning a partnership with GBF is a great way of celebrating 100 years of academic excellence.
