DLSU raising P1 B to support 18,000 scholars

MANILA, Philippines - The De La Salle University (DLSU) in Manila is aiming to raise a scholarship fund of P1 billion, which they described as a monumental campaign called “One La Salle Scholarship Fund”, to support one out of every five students, or 18,000 scholars, in 17 La Salle schools across the country to mark its centennial celebration.

In preparation for its centennial on June 16, 2011, DLSU is focusing on fulfilling its founder’s vision, which is making quality education accessible to all.

In a statement, the DLSU said the University owes its beginnings to the Community of Christian Brothers, established in the 1600s by St. John Baptist de La Salle, a French educator who devoted his life to educating the poor.

As a tribute to St. La Salle, DLSU has launched this centerpiece project for its centennial celebration.

The project has the whole La Salle community involved, from student organizations and alumni associations to individuals and corporations all contributing to the success of the major campaign.

DLSU president Br. Jun Erguiza FSC has urged the community to make the centennial celebration relevant to society.

He described such milestone as “an opportune moment for us not only to relish our achievements and successes but to reflect on the challenges ahead of us, in pursuit of the Lasallian mission.”

Vice Chancellor for Lasallian Mission and External Relations Br. Bernard Oca FSC is optimistic about the creativity and the passion of individuals involved in the University’s various centennial activities.

“Our target for the One La Salle Scholarship Fund is not impossible to reach,” Oca said.
