Ateneo's Japanese Studies Program holds international conference

-

MANILA, Philippines - The Japanese Studies Program of the Ateneo de Manila University is holding an international conference entitled “Consuming Japan: Society, Politics, Economy and Japanese Food” on Jan. 28-29, 2011 at the Ateneo Loyola campus.

This two-day conference will deal with the popular but not fully explored topic of Japanese food. It seeks to promote food studies among researchers and identify possible research agenda relevant to Japanese studies particularly in the Philippines and in the Asia-Pacific region. It also aims to provide a lively forum for participants to meet and exchange ideas and information in a friendly academic setting.

International speakers include Dr. Katarzyna Cwiertka (Leiden University), Dr. Stephanie Assmann (Akita University, Japan), Dr. James Farrer (Sophia University), Dr. Hendrik Meyer-Ohle (National University of Singapore) and Mr. Kazuoki Ono (agricultural journalist). Some sessions will allow young Filipino researchers in the field to present their most recent works. It is hoped that this lineup of presentations by seasoned and new, as well as international and local scholars, will stimulate vibrant discussions and help create new networks in this most interesting and dynamic field of research.

For more details and registration inquiries, please contact co-convener Dr. Karl Ian Uy Cheng Chua at 4266001 local 5248, 5249 and 4264326, or [email protected]. This conference is being sponsored by Japan Foundation.
