Human peace sign to mark UN International Day of Non-Violence

-

MANILA, Philippines - Students from different Pasig and San Juan Schools, volunteers and peace advocates will form a Human Peace Sign as the culminating activity to mark the 2nd UN Int’l Day of Non-Violence at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasig this Sept. 26, 2008.

This will cap a week-long “Celebration for Peace and Non-Violence” organized by students and volunteers of Ang Komunidad para sa Ikauunlad ng Tao, an international organization that espouses the methodology of active non-violence as the only valid means towards building a culture of peace, tolerance and non-discrimination.

This year’s celebration includes an essay-writing contest on the theme “Palawagin ang Walang Karahasan sa Edukasyon” and a fabric painting contest on the theme “Ang Mag-aaral na Walang Karahasan” which is open to all high school students of Pasig-San Juan and college students of Pasig City. A three-hour workshop on the theme of Non-Violence and art painting techniques with hands-on practice for contestants of the Fabric Painting Contest will be held on Sept. 20.

An exhibit on Non-violence will be on display at the PLP-UPC grounds from Sept. 22-26. The celebration includes a cultural program of dances and songs presented by the participating schools and will culminate with the formation of a Human Peace Sign with candle lighting ceremonies.
