MANILA, Philippines - The Caloocan City Science High School team bagged the grand championship award in the recent AFINITE 1st Nihongo Quiz Bee held last Feb. 28, at Cinema 1, Mall of Asia, Pasay City.
The event showcased seven schools from Metro Manila competing for the best individual and team category. Schools who sent four trained pupils (the fourth being the alternate) included the Science high schools of Caloocan, Makati, Manila, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Pasig, and Torres High School.
The CCSHS contingent composed of Lycelle Santos Español, Rossaine Mae Famor, Ileene Ginelle Sarmiento, and Rose Angelique Santos (team substitute) were trained by a dedicated Japanese volunteer teacher named Yoneda Akihisa, who taught the Japanese language to his students by heart. The team garnered not only the team grand championship award but also the individual honors. Through the encouragement and blessings of CCSHS principal Carleen Sedilla, the team gave out their best with Ileene Ginelle Sarmiento who topped the individual category, and Lycelle Español who won third in the same category.
