The Giga Pearl
But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. — 2 Corinthians 4:7
When Abraham Reyes’ aunt received a giant clam as a gift in 1959, she found a large pearl inside, but didn’t think much of it. She kept the pearl in her home in the Philippines for more than 60 years before bequeathing it to Abraham. When he asked gem specialists to examine it, they made a shocking discovery: the pearl was the largest natural blister pearl in the world, and worth over $60 million!
Abraham named his pearl the Giga Pearl. Maybe you’re thinking: “Abraham’s a lucky man to possess such a treasure.”
But, as a Christian, you possess an even more valuable treasure! 2 Corinthians 4:7 tells us: “We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” The believers in Corinth tended to put their trust in external shows of power, like being rich and eloquent. Paul was reminding them that their true source of power was the gospel, and knowing Jesus as their Lord and Savior. This power enables us to flourish even when we are hard pressed (v.9).
Today, like the Corinthians, we may face persecution and trouble. But we know that we have this treasure inside us that gives us the power to thrive. Now, isn’t that far more valuable than a $60 million Giga Pearl? Or, even 60 million Giga Pearls? — Ruth Wan-Lau
