The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - For the fifth year, lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transsexuals (LGBT) and their allies marched along the academic oval at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman on Thursday, calling for an end to discrimination against members of the LGBT community.

The pride march comes a day after the United States Supreme Court voted 5-4 to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act, leading to a federal recognition of same-sex marriages in 13 states in the country. The decision is regarded as a victory for the LGBT movement in the US and around the world.

In the Philippines, however, a lot still has to be done, in particular the passage of the Anti-Discrimination Bill in the Congress, University Student Council member and Gender Committee Chair Arjay Mercado said.

He added that the pride march is a statement that in UP, members of the LGBT community are welcome and respected.
