ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago - The Freeman

For decades, I have eagerly participated in the annual Sinulog Film Festival, a vibrant celebration of cinematic artistry that follows the rich tapestry of religious and cultural festivities. Each year, the festival ignites my passion for creativity and artistic expression, showcasing the talent of filmmakers who navigate the unpredictable shooting schedules that often coincide with the festival activities. This dynamic environment fosters innovation and adaptability in storytelling, making the festival a cherished highlight of my year. It deepens my appreciation for our culture and the transformative power of film, reminding me of the profound connection between art and community.

I began my journey at the Sinulog Film Festival years ago while I was still a professor at the University of the Philippines Cebu. Even after retiring, this festival remains one of my favorite events. It offers me the opportunity to reconnect with my former students, colleagues, and friends from the local film industry. I cherish these interactions, as they foster a sense of community and collaboration in the arts.

It is my unwavering commitment to participating in the festival every year. This dedication drives me to connect with various producers and directors, ensuring I can contribute to their projects. My motivation goes beyond personal gain; it's about offering something meaningful to the Holy Child and uplifting the local film community. Additionally, I see this as an opportunity to guide emerging actors in the industry, sharing my experience and knowledge with the next generation. Each project is not just a film; it's a chance to give back and nurture talent while honoring our traditions.

For me, the talent fee I receive from acting is not particularly enticing, so it cannot be my primary source of motivation. Similarly, any monetary awards from winning at the festival hold little allure for me. Instead, my passion lies in the joy of storytelling, the creative process, and the connections I make within the film community. The real satisfaction comes from contributing to our cultural heritage and mentoring aspiring actors. Ultimately, it’s the love for the craft and the impact I can have that truly drives my participation in the festival.

For many years, I have been blessed to receive accolades, whether for lead or supporting roles. This year, I was honored to win the Best Supporting Actress award for my performance in “Salig Lang.” I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the director and the entire production team for this incredible opportunity. Collaborating with such young and talented individuals has been truly inspiring; their unwavering drive to produce quality films ignites a passion for creativity in all of us. I deeply appreciate the chance to work together and contribute to a project that embodies our shared dedication to storytelling.

Ultimately, my involvement in the festival is driven by a higher calling. I participate with the hope that my contributions will resonate on a deeper level, fulfilling wishes that extend beyond personal gain. This includes fostering good health for my family, promoting reconciliation, and advocating for peace among those who have endured long-standing conflicts.

As long as I have the strength, I will use my talents to serve our Creator, the ultimate source of my abilities. My constant dedication is to use my gifts for His glory and the betterment of his people. This profound dedication inspires my desire to share stories that inspire and provide hope to others' lives. In my path of faith and creativity, I hope to positively touch the world and cast a light on people in need.
