Holiday road safety

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Perez - The Freeman

The holidays are a time of celebration, relaxation and, for many, a chance to travel. The season means a break from work or school, providing the perfect opportunity for family vacations or personal getaways. We want to travel to popular destinations both local and international. Visitors also come to visit us. As the number of travelers increases during the holiday season, so does the risk of accidents. Cebu’s roads, while beautiful and bustling, can be chaotic, and navigating them safely requires a bit of preparation and awareness.

In the past days, many traffic incidents were logged in Cebu. This included the death of a child and her father in Naga City. The influx of travelers always brings an increase in road traffic, especially during peak seasons, which can lead to accidents if proper precautions aren't taken. Even the lack of vehicles can lead to an accident, all because of reckless imprudence. Authorities often rule out drivers still continuing their journey despite the presence of alcohol in their system, a testament to forgetting their responsibility as drivers.

In 2022 alone, the Philippines saw a significant rise in the number of road incidents, and Cebu, as a bustling urban hub, wasn’t exempt. Whether it's due to overcrowded public transport, unpredictable driving behavior, or unfamiliarity with local road conditions, accidents are all too common. The city's growing population, combined with an influx of holiday travelers, further escalates the situation. The types of accidents vary, from minor fender-benders to more severe collisions. In many cases, these incidents occur at busy intersections, poorly-lit roads, or areas where traffic rules are either unclear or not strictly enforced. For tourists, unfamiliarity with the local driving culture or road signs can heighten the risk.

It’s always a must before heading out to familiarize with the travel route. The vehicle must always be in shape and traffic rules must be followed. It’s also best to stay alert especially in busy tourist areas, be extra cautious for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorbikes that might not follow expected road patterns. Avoid distractions like texting or using your phone while driving. Moving forward to the long weekend, we must always prioritize safety. It’s essential to keep your safety top of mind.

Always remember that the holidays, while a time for relaxation, can also be a time of heightened risk. Take necessary precautions, stay informed about road conditions, and make responsible travel choices. For authorities, there’s a pressing need for improved road safety infrastructure, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, and more public education on safe driving practices, especially during the holiday season. But as a traveler, the best thing you can do is stay vigilant, avoid risky behavior, and make safety your number one priority. The holidays should be a time of joy, not a time spent recovering from avoidable accidents. Make the last days of the year memorable with happy times, not one that will be a horror to recall.
