TNVS drivers lament LTFRB plan to cut surge rate

MANILA, Philippines — It will be a bleak Christmas for Transport Network Vehicle Services (TNVS) drivers if the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) pushes through with plans to reduce surge fees by 50%, as drivers fear that this could substantially slash their take home pay.

This according to the TNVS Community Philippines (TCP), which claimed that reducing surge fees would result in losses for TNVS drivers due to the high costs of fuel and the traffic gridlock in Metro Manila.

“Malaki ang magiging epekto ng mga bagong regulasyon na ito sa kita ng mga TNVS drivers na babagtasin ang traffic na dulot ng kapaskuhan ngayong Disyembre. Maaring malugi ang mga TNVS drivers sa gas, boundary at iba pang gastusin lalo na at mas matagal ang kailangan naming biyayihin para sa parehas na distansya dahil sa traffic,” TCP said in a statement.

“Sa biglaan at walang abisong pagbagsak ng pinapayagang surge fee, walang ibang talo kung hindi ang driver,” said the alliance of TNVS drivers.

Surge fees, the group stressed, were the only means by which TNVS drivers could recoup their losses and reminded the LTFRB that said fees are fully compliant with the regulations set by the government board itself. 

“Nang dahil sa surge fee na aming nakukuha nang buo, kami ay nakakabawi mula sa mga dagdag na gastusin ngayong kapaskuhan. Ang modelo at ceiling ng surge pricing ay alinsunod sa mga regulasyon na nailathala na ng LTFRB,” said the TCP.

The TCP urged regulators to conduct a dialogue with affected drivers as the alliance reiterated that they were a key component of the transportation sector.

The drivers said: “Nais naming ipaalala sa LTFRB, sa mga pasahero at sa mga TNC na tayong lahat ay mga mahahalagang bahagi sa transport sector. Nawa’y maintindihan ng mas nakararami na hindi lamang ang kapakanan ng mga pasahero o ang interes ng TNCs ang dapat binibigyang pansin, kundi pati na rin ang sapat at patas na kabuhayan para sa mga TNVS drivers.”

“Dumudulog kami sa LTFRB upang magkaroon ng agarang dayalogo patungkol sa surge pricing at ang epekto nito sa kabuhayan ng mga drivers. Inaanyayahan namin ang ahensya na patuloy pag-aralan ang mga patakaran nilang nais ipatupad, lalo na at libo-libong kabuhayan ang nakasalalay sa bawat regulasyong kanilang ipinapataw.”
