The intrinsic role of women in peace building

ROSES AND THORNS - Pia Roces Morato - The Philippine Star

The inclusion of women in peace building can take many forms, particularly for efforts in addressing rising global hostilities that include armed insurgencies or civil wars that rip countries apart. In ending conflicts, it is important to remember that the negotiating table requires a more inclusive process aside from the armed actors involved, where women are seen to play more pivotal roles in building peace from the ground up and from top to bottom, while engaging multiple stakeholders.

Being part of  local government and coming from the executive branch, part of my responsibility is to ensure that our communities are empowered to address critical issues. Studies have shown that women who also participate in peace processes are usually less focused on the spoils of war and more on reconciliation, education, economic development and justice – all of which are elements for sustained peace.

The prevention of conflict and all forms of violence against women and girls form part of the objective of women involved in peace and security. Owing to the fact that women possess extraordinary perspectives, problem solving skills and communication styles that can positively impact a security team’s overall effectiveness, their inclusion in promoting peace and development creates stability in the lives of people in a community. Since women are considered to be the backbone of families and communities, their nurturing nature enables them to provide care and support to families, which is especially essential to the development of children.

Significant roles in community building are also perceived as leadership roles where women can thrive as participants in community organizations. Peace and security is important for society, as this provides the foundation for a secure and just community so that individuals can prosper safely. Peace is the absence of violence, fear and conflict and research has shown that the notable participation of women in peace processes and peace building activities increases the chances of democratization because they are less violent and more caring.

Every day, women are commended for their ability to fulfill multiple roles, thus considering their contributions to be the foundation of every society. It is crucial therefore to empower women as, by doing so, their efforts largely reflect the health and social development of families, communities and countries. Women reach their full potential when they live safe, fulfilled and productive lives. Women peacekeepers serve as powerful partners and role models for girls in post-conflict settings in communities by teaching them to advocate for their own rights and interests.

In conclusion, women are important agents for creating stability in the lives of their families, hence giving them the right to also participate in peace negotiations and decision making processes that affect them, their families and the future of their countries. Evidence has also shown that the inclusion of women makes a peace agreement more likely to succeed, which ultimately contributes to longer lasting peace.
