Independence in our waters

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Perez - The Freeman

The documentation of the Chinese Military Militia blocking our Philippine Coast Guard for a medical evacuation was appalling. In a professional tone, our personnel politely informed them that a soldier aboard one of our ships needed medical assistance. Instead of cooperation, they responded with a rude remark, insisting that they control those waters and that entering the area required permission from the People's Republic of China. Ironically, they have been encroaching on our Exclusive Economic Zone without our consent.

The Chinese act as if they possess unquestionable rights to the West Philippine Sea. They display unwavering confidence and disregard our sovereignty. This behavior seems habitual, with impunity maintained over the years. While the issue has only recently gained attention, it poses a significant threat to our sovereignty and independence. We are not exempt from defending what is rightfully ours.

Experts from the University of the Philippines have reported the depletion of marine life in the West Philippine Sea. They documented dead and damaged corals, which are nearly impossible to restore. It is suspected that foreign entities have exploited our marine resources for their own agenda. If only the international courts were more responsive, swift action could be taken to address this pressing issue.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines assert that the People's Republic of China is engaging in united front activities within our country, attempting to portray themselves as friends rather than adversaries. Despite their actions in the West Philippine Sea, they seek to convince us of their goodwill. Intelligence reports indicate a rise in Chinese individuals participating in exchange programs, exploiting visa changes from tourist to student status as a form of fraud.

However, our government's approach is one of restraint, aiming to maintain calm and demonstrate maturity. Rather than resorting to armed conflict, our strategy is rooted in diplomacy. We strive to convey the truth through embedded journalists, yet the public response seems muted, possibly influenced by the manipulation of social media algorithms.

As we celebrate Independence Day tomorrow, we are reminded of the challenges plaguing our territory. It is imperative that we unite behind the narrative that our Exclusive Economic Zone belongs to us, and our fisherfolk have the right to access it. We must expedite diplomatic efforts to address these issues; otherwise, the consequences could extend beyond the loss of coral reefs to endangering the lives of our soldiers at sea.
