EDITORIAL - Thank you

The year 2022 was not one many of us here in Cebu expected to unfold as it did. Following almost two years of what can be called a global shutdown because of the pandemic and then super typhoon Odette, people expected a breath of fresh air with the new year. They expected it was a year when they would leave all their troubles behind and pick up where they left off.

However, it was not to be. Barely two months into the new year a conflict happened half a world away. And though we were so far, we felt the effects of its ripples. As did the rest of the world.

Tension over territorial disputes also happened close to where we are. One particular dispute between a superpower and an independent nation it erroneously considers a rogue province is constantly threatening to plunge this part of the world into unrest, us included.

The trials were not only international. There were also happenings in the country many were not prepared to deal with. The return of a dynasty supposed to have been long toppled from power is challenging what has become convention. The seemingly never-ending corruption and drug problems are still there. Not to mention the constant wrath of nature which always gives us a drubbing when we least expect it.

In short, 2022 was a lot to deal with. While we are tempted to say 2023 will be better or that it cannot be worse, the thing is that after our experience with 2022 we just can’t say this with confidence.

And this is fine. Let each year bring what it will. What is important is that we always do our best no matter what situation life puts us in, that we don’t lose faith in the Almighty, and that we don’t abandon each other during the hard times.

Which brings us to our expression of thanks. Thank you for always being our loyal readers. This newspaper is not perfect and we make our own share of mistakes, but despite this you have stuck it out with us for another year.

On this last day of the year, allow us to thank you for continuing to have faith in your fair and fearless newspaper.
