Kabilin: The living link

ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago-Visaya - The Freeman

What makes it possible for us to remain faithful to who we really are? Whom do we really wish to pass the past on to and appreciate in our future generations? The 15th Gabii sa Kabilin, an annual celebration of Cebu's heritage sites that can serve as an inspiration for enhancing the kind of society we live in, will analyze the past as we look back on the past.

The said celebration took place on October 21, 2022, from 6 p.m. to midnight. Participants were given the opportunity to ride the tartanilla, a century-old mode of transportation pulled by a single horse, as well as visit the Casa Gorordo, Museo Sugbu, the Yap Sandiego Ancestral House, the UP Cebu Heritage Building, and other identified sites.

It is significant that more students participated in this project since it was primarily designed for them to build an understanding of the past, of what makes up the past, and of the many ways in which the past has changed and contributed to the creation of the present.

Our heritage offers hints about our past and the development of our society. It enables us to become more aware of ourselves while assisting us in reflecting on our past and cultural practices.

Societies have worked to preserve their past for thousands of years. Depending on what was available at the time, they have used a variety of techniques. For instance, the elaborate, centuries-old building used by the Egyptians to record their history. Jewish scribes copied manuscripts precisely for the same reason. To help people remember historical events, the Irish had bards, who were akin to professional poets. These are only a few instances of how communities have realized the value of recording their cultural legacy.

Generations of people record their history in part because they strive to guarantee that the accounts told are accurately maintained. They want to guarantee that future generations will be able to understand their heritage and culture. Many experiences and a wealth of knowledge can be lost over time if they are not preserved.

When we consider the kind of knowledge that has been recorded for ages, we can see the worth in a wide range of topics. For instance, in-depth knowledge is available in a wide range of subjects, including law, foreign policy, psychology, economics, geography, linguistics, sociology, medicine, and a great deal more. Knowledge in these topics from a historical viewpoint can greatly improve our understanding of life.

It is equally crucial when it comes to looking for and learning about our own family history. It offers us the possibility to comprehend customs that were unique to our forebears. We may learn more about the history of our family and culture, as well as specifics about our ancestry.

The past and the present are interconnected. What transpires in the future will be influenced by both the daily choices we make and the historical events that have already taken place. Many judgments made today are, to a considerable extent, influenced by knowledge of what has transpired in the past.

It is critical to consider our heritage as a priceless inheritance. Being ignorant of one's rich background is regrettable, especially considering that it forms a significant part of who one is. Not only should we be aware of and be knowledgeable about our ancestry, but we also ought to teach our children and grandchildren about it. After all, heritage is the gift of the past to the grateful present for an enlightened and proud future.
