Beware of politicians giving gifts

WHAT MATTERS MOST - Atty. Josephus B. Jimenez - The Freeman

“Beware of the man bearing gifts and invoking flattering words.” This is God’s warning in the Book of Proverbs, Chapter 29, verses 4 to 5. And Virgil (writer of the masterpiece “Aeneid”) wrote: “Beware of the Greeks bearing gifts.” This statement, of course, refers to the Trojan horse, which was built by the Greeks, as suggested by Odysseus, for them to enter Troy. The Greeks gave the Trojans a huge wooden horse, which the latter welcomed into the city. When the Trojans were already drunk after a day-long festivities and merriment, the Greek warriors who were hiding inside the wooden horse came out and massacred the drunken Trojans.

Many politicians are taking advantage of the Christmas season as the opportunity to distribute bags of rice, canned goods, and all sort of gifts. Of course, they are not giving all these in the name of love, Christian charity, mercy, or compassion. These are plain and simple bribes. They need the votes of the poor, the support of the masses, and giving gifts is the most effective way to gather an audience, and make a show of their pretended generosity. The politicians are equal to the Greeks referred to by Virgil, and their gifts are nothing but Trojan Horses containing betrayals, treacheries, and scams. People must be wary of the gifts and the flattery emanating from trapos and their minions and underlings.

The politicians would flatter you and make you feel good as if you are the most important person in the world. They do this, of course, not for sincere reasons but for their not-so-hidden agenda, not because they value you but precisely because they value your votes and the votes of their family. Of course, the politicians do not do this regularly or always. They just do this when elections are fast approaching. They humor you, entertain you, offer you things that excite you, please you, and cater to your desires. After the elections, do not ever expect to see them again, nor hope they would return your calls, or reply to your text messages and e-mails.

Traditional politicians are congenital liars and hardened traitors. They do not have qualms in breaking their promises or turning away from the core principles they used to profess and swore to uphold. They act and decide on the basis of what suits their ambitions, their greed for power, money and glory. Public service has nothing to do with it. They would shed tears and even plead for pity before people in large rallies and conventions, with all the put-on drama and showbiz choreography just to project an image of goodness and pleasant disposition. Like the Trojan horse of the Greeks, most politicians are fake, frauds, and big liars.

And so, people should never, never trust trapos bearing gifts and flattering words. Their words are venom and their promises are lies.
