EDITORIAL - It won’t be surprising if Margot runs again
Cebu City Councilor Margot Osmeña declared she wants no part in the 2019 midterm elections. She recently told the media she is retiring from politics and would no longer seek for what would be a sure third and last term as councilor for the south district.
Osmeña, however, will not be totally out of the limelight. Although admitting she is no longer interested in running for any post, she said her political involvement will now revolve around the need to support the re-election bid of her husband, Mayor Tomas Osmeña.
Well, the next election is still eight months away and a lot of things can still happen. The city’s first lady may have already announced her decision but she still cannot escape the fact that another run for a City Council seat remains highly possible.
That is why it will no longer be surprising if Margot, as the filing of certificate of candidacy draws nearer, will invalidate her earlier statement and opt to seek for reelection in May.
For one, the Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan needs her in the council because it needs the number in its bid to maintain the majority after the next elections. There’s no question Margot still has the charisma and the power to win.
Mayor Osmeña also needs Margot to stay in the council to push for his programs and projects. It cannot be denied that a Margot with an elective position is more credible and influential when speaking in public than a Margot wielding a title of just a plain housewife.
Before she entered politics, Margot was firm about not having interest in running for elective positions. But an incessant push by supporters eventually convinced her to run for the council. And the rest is history.
