Traffic jams

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   - The Freeman

"Gov't execs snub Senate traffic probe?" -- Headline. If the senators really want to know what causes traffic jams, no need to call the gov't execs. They just have to leave their Senate seats and go to where the traffic jams are.

Former Gilas Pilipinas Coach Chot Reyes doesn't seem to give a damn to Andray Blatche's non-inclusion in the new Gilas lineup. In fact, he's been quoted as saying: "Blatche's absence is a blessing."

***

Come to think of it, there was so much fuss and effort to take in Blatche even to the point of making him a Filipino citizen in Congress, only to miss him in favor of a Chinese team in China.

I had a talk on the phone with a motorcycle manufacturing firm exec. We talked among other things about Manila's traffic jams. He laughed when I said maybe Manila's traffic planners can stop scratching their heads for solution by introducing Cebu's habal-habal motorcycles. He laughed because he had already heard about the habal-habal.

***

My phone guest said Cebu's habal-habal is okay but it cannot hold a candle to Vietnam's "motorbike trucks." In Vietnam, he said, motorcycles carry cabinets, tables, refrigerator and they even serve as funeral cars.

***

Seriously, I like to believe that if more motorcycles are allowed to use more space in the highways, then the four-wheeler cars and the 10 or 12 wheelers traffic congestion cannot be as serious as the traffic jams now being experienced in Metro Manila. But that's only one man's consensus. Hehe.

Naldo (second name withheld on request) was a very active newspaperman. He used to cover Congress and many of the national government offices. After 10 years on the job he made a drastic "paradigm shift." He stopped being a journalist and decided to sell newspapers and magazines instead of writing for them.

***

Now, Naldo buys old newspapers (lumang diyaryo) by the tons in Asian cities like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Bangkok and even in the US. He supplies with this old newspapers two factories in Tokyo that manufacture papier mache for export.
