Where gays are jailed

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   - The Freeman

There is a proposed Mandaue code protecting the LGBT (lesbian, gays, bisexuals and transgenders) community. Only the other day I received a newsclipping about gays in Uganda.

* * *

The newsclip said that a bill has just been signed into law in Uganda penalizing homosexuals. All confirmed homosexuals are to be jailed for life. It outlaws the "promotion of homosexuality" and the people are "required to denounce gays."

* * *

Some newspapers in Kampala, the Ugandan capital, have shown support for the new law-- one paper even had its banner screaming "Hang them!" The gay rights activists, priests, and other religious persons have been reported as fighting hard against this law.

The televised Senate hearings of the Mamasapano bloodbath are welcomed by televiewers eager to know the latest development. But teleserye fanatics and followers of the noontime shows are shaking their heads in disapproval, although there are segments of the hearings where pathos also sometimes rules.

Sen. Grace Poe who presides over the Mamasapano hearings is winning the compliments and praises of televiewers because of her skillful handling of the proceedings. This in spite of her being a senatorial neophyte. She doesn't hesitate to cut short any senator who talks too much and grandstanding at will wasting time.

Despite the no-holds-barred attack by the senators against VP Jojo Binay, the Makati stalwart continues to lead in all presidential surveys. So confident is Jojo of his strength in the race that he is now thinking of making DILG Sec. Mar Roxas his running mate.

I was asked by a Freeman subscriber: "What's in the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) that Noynoy seems ready to rise or fall over the issue? Taxi drivers and barbershop bystanders are also asking this question. Aren't you?"

* * *

Freeman columnist Atty. Josephus B. Jimenez said in his column "What Matters Most" (TF, Feb. 13/15): "The BBL is dead, let us bury it."
